![]() Alnet's Ground Sheeting featured very prominently at the opening ceremony of the ICC World Cup Cricket. The Ground Sheeting was laid down on the Newlands cricket field for: 5 rehearsals before the opening, 2 dress rehearsals and on the Grand Opening. This is a total of eight times in all that the material was laid down. The fabric was laid down on the entire field for 3 to 5 days per time in between rehearsals, without being removed. Five thousand people performed actions on the fabric per time. This included vehicles, people on stilts and the weight of 32 tons of component parts of central stage which formed part of the set-up. Mr Christo Erasmus, Head Groundsman at Newlands Cricket stadium Cape Town, mentioned prior to the rehearsals, that he could not foresee that the field would not be damaged. A week before the opening he said that it was "absolutely amazing and without the ground sheeting, the whole event of having the opening ceremony and the opening game at the same venue could never have taken place." According to plan, 5513,8 running metres of 3m wide fabric was intended to cover the field - in the end 5508,8 metres were used. There was no stitching, overlapping or webbing attached to the final product which was supplied or laid down - and the fabric could be re-used again. We are very proud to have been part of the whole operation that went with the opening ceremony of the ICC World Cup Cricket. - Mariane Truter |
